He and Flory have a running joke that suggests that all is not right with the imperialistic British: "It was a joke between the two workforce to pretend that the British empire was an aged female patient of of the doctor's. In the beginning, Flory is the only eligible bachelor, and Elizabeth, who is desire a husband, shows interest in him. However, she distrusts his acceptance of native culture, and for her this becomes intertwined with the rumors that he has a native mistress.

In addition, she is more conventional in her views than is he, and this is indicated when he states to her that he sometimes wants the courage not to be a pukka sahib: "It was an unwise gossip. She knew very well by this time the meaning of the phrase "pukka sahib" and all it stood for. His remark had made the difference in their viewpoint a miniature clearer" (124).

Flory has a certain child-like demeanor as well, but he is not surly and is an open and friendly man, something Verrall certainly is not. Flory is put apart from the rest of the population physically by the handsome birthmark across his face. He is not a ardent figure, however, and is weak in his own way. He is unable to action the establishment and only tries to in a cursory block out of way. Flory is a man whose early good intentions have been faint away by contact with the local British community, and in his own way he has been as corrupted by the society in which he lives as those he considers corrupt. His impuissance is only underscored by his suicide, for he cannot stand against the corruption more or less him. He also fails to see the true nature of Elizabeth, perhaps being willingly deluded by his loneliness.
