Following World War II, consternation spread among Americans that communists were inauspicious their homeland from the inside. One reason that confirmed this growing fear was when the news reported that Soviet espionage had uncovered the recipe for nuclear bombs. With tension growing between the Soviet Union and the United States, socialism was frowned upon in the US with the Americans labelling communists as “reds”. Many in the US believed that just being surmise of communism was like being a murderer and anyone who was associated with communism was seen as a traitor. It was un-American and un-patriotic to be seen as a communist, and having any association with communism, well, you may as well have just been one.
With communism on the rise and the fear bed cover further, some large number, in particular, Joseph McCarthy, a member of the House of un-American Activities Committee, tendered to the fears and appealed to the American public to gain political recognition. He practically made appearances in the news explaining that in his possession were lists of muckle suspected of communism who had been “blacklisted”.
