The history of dementia praecox did not start until the late eighteenth century. However, schizophrenia-like syndrome (psychosis) was recorded in the 12th and 13th century. During this time, psychosis was equated to demonic origins and paganism. Individuals displaying these symptoms or ‘madness’ as it was called, were usually banished from cities and towns (Fabrega, 1990). As the field of psychopathology was born, the institutionalization of people exhibiting signs of schizophrenia grew in popularity. These institutions became ‘museums’ for the public to gape at people displaying lunacy. It was not until the 1800s that this ignorance gradually gave way for a more than effective treatment of the mentally ill. During this time, physicians began to define people displaying symptoms of schizophrenia. It was in 1911 that a Swiss psychiatrist Eugene Bleuler, first coined the term ‘schizophrenia’ (Walters, 2005). It was derived from the Greek words schizo, meaning explode, and phrene, meaning mind, the “split” refers to the split or disintegration of the thinking and psychic functioning (Alexander & Selesnick, 1966).
Eugene was overly the first one to classify the symptoms of schizophrenia as every positive (delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech or behavior) and negative symptoms (affective flattening, alogia, and avolition) of the illness) (Shi-Kwang Lin, et al, 1998).
