Public wellness goes back a long way. Charles-Edward A. Winslow, an American commonplace wellness leader, defined public health as the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting physical health and efficiency through organized community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the apply of community infections, the education of the individual in principles of personal hygiene, the formation of medical and nursing service for the early diagnosis and arrest treatment of disease, and the development of the social machinery which will ensure to all individual in the community a standard of sustenance adequate for the maintenance of health (Winkelstein Jr., 2002). Today, the definition remains the same, although virtually may add the mental and physical aspects of health as well. This definition provided has lasted throughout the years and in 1948 the World wellness Organization used it to provide the definition of health: A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not barely the absence of disease or infirmity (Winkelstein Jr., 2002).
Although health was invariably a concern including in ancient times, during the fourteenth and 15th centuries, also known as the Renaissance period, public health became a major issue due to the bubonic plaque. It killed quarter to one-third of the European population between 1347 and 1351. In the sixteenth part century, syphilis and a form of influenza became widespread in Europe. Smallpox reached America killing the native population. Due to these harmful events, the three most important contributions to public health came close to for the Renaissance period.
