The poet describes the charwoman, the hawthorn dishearten and the womans life in various ways. She symbolises the woman as defensive and brave person. The poet symbolises the gear up as a protective shield and her life is set forth as a very subtle one in which the woman doesnt want much change brought about.
The poet, in the third stanza has given an image of the woman to the reader. The poet describes the woman as an untidy person who is very withdrawn from the international domain of a function and would prefer to hide away. This portrays to the reader of how reserved the woman is and that she tries to shield herself from mentally or feelingally hurting herself.
As the hawthorn hedge grew bigger and bigger it symbolised the womans philia getting stronger. Year-long, wind turns her grindstone heart and whets a thornbranch alike(p) a knife, this line explains how the womans heart gets tougher and over time all the more than defensive she becomes. The poet besides describes that at the same time as the hawthorn hedge gets taller it also shields and protects her from any harm emotionally or mentally.
