Throughout the novel, Proctor keeps the secret of his affair with Abigail Williams in order to save his reputation with the townspeople. Elizabeth even asks him to expose Abigails ways, but he is too selfish to think round Elizabeth over himself. The themes jealousy and selfishness are seen in the relationship of John and Elizabeth Proctor throughout the novel. Elizabeth is jealous that John does not want to immediately reveal the truth about Abigail and instantly gets jealous that John still has feelings for her.
