During the untimely morning hours on November 20, 1969 seventy eight American Indians traveled by boat through the San Francisco Bay to the ramshackle Alcatraz Island that was once home to one of the most famous penitentiaries in America. These brave seventy-eight set out occupy the addicted prison with aspirations of creating an American Indian cultural center amidst the crumbling, vacant, and seemingly uninhabitable former prison. What began this November morning would bear more significance. This shape of protest would push a cultural causal agency that had been create from raw stuff for years prior to the forefront of the American, and world media. It would undoubtedly switch light on what would prove to be a driving riddled by fractures amongst the American Indian people, but that would at last reveal the invisible people to the world.
Beginning in the early 60s the American Indian youth movement, headed by Clyde Warrior, would set into motion changes that would shake the perception of Indian-white relations for years to come. Warrior challenged the thought of Indians who had come before him that didnt feel that protest, and demonstrations were possible ways for government policy change. But, though his protests such as the fish-ins in the Pacific Northwest grabbed attention such movement was hard to catch on else where.



His movement with the Native Indian Youth Council ultimately became a stepping-stone for young Indians that hoped to enter Jobs in the traditional status quo work place. This betrothal kept the Indian people under what Warrior believed was a vitiate of dependency. Clyde stated Indian people are not free, and that choices and decisions are made by bearcats.
